Preface

This book is the writings of my mother, Hilda Williams over a period of years while she was living in the Northern Province of Northern Rhodesia in the 1940's and 1950's. I make no apologies for the content or style as they were written long before the age of 'political correctness' when people dare not voice even their casual views on many subjects.

Those who lived in sub-Saharan Africa many years ago may understand the context in which they were written, but for younger people who have no experience of such a life it would be pointless to try to explain the complex relationships that existed at that time between the various racial and social groups.

My own elaborations alongside the main text are written recently to assist the reader to understand and put into a suitable timescale the things that my mother has written about. My own writings are much more coloured by 'political correctness' since I am of the next generation and am aware of such things; however any views or opinions expressed are my own truly held ones and none are modified to suit currently acceptable views.
