Views of Kitwe and Nkana 1967-68

Some of these shots were taken when I chartered a single-engined Piper for a last look at Kitwe, from the air. I thought my nephew, 16, would also enjoy the short flight, but he didn't say much while I was busily taking photos through the side window. He slowly turned green and had to be rushed home. Strange, that, because I'm the one who has no head for heights.

photo The corner of Mpezeni Avenue, which was once Dorset Avenue. My rather grand 3-bathroom house (rented by the company, and two sections sub-let, which paid the rent) is in the centre of the photo. Albert Eaton's rectory is upper right.

photo The moon behind clouds, taken while walking in a piece of semi-waste land near Kitwe Park, an ideal dog-walking venue.

photo Aerial view of Nkana mine.

photo Taken against the light, late in the day. People didn't know about pollution in those days.

photo Is this a tailings dam? I can't work out, after nearly 35 years, where and what it is.

The front cover and selected pages from a booklet published in 1962.

Kitwe becomes a City _ Facts for the investor _ Cost of living

The name of the publisher is not given. I assume it was compiled by the City Council. It was printed by Associated Printers Ltd at their Kitwe branch. In those days, colour separation and screening facilities available locally were fairly primitive, and even the typesetting in this booklet was probably cold metal. It certainly looks like it.
